Android 12: All Information on Google’s New OS

Android 12: All information about the new operating system

The distribution of Android 11 started in September 2020 – many devices now have the new operating system. What does the successor do better? At the developer keynote Google I / O, the company officially presented Android 12.

The second version of the public beta contains promised content, but also additional innovations. We summarize the most important details for you.

The biggest change in Android 12 is the design. Google is saying goodbye to the old styles and giving the new operating system a new system color, among other things.

It is individually adaptable and enables a very personal design for each user.

The contrast strength and the look of the widgets can be adjusted. Google will initially activate its own “selections” exclusively for its own Pixel smartphones.

In summary, Google calls out the motto “Material You” with Android 12, which amounts to a complete redesign of the surface.

So far, a part of it is visible – your own selection is limited to the basic functions.

Android 12 Beta - Functionalities

The company promises that the operating system will have a more intuitive design. Google Pay and Google Home are now hidden in the drop-down menu and are more easily accessible.

There is also the option of deactivating access to the device’s camera and microphone. If an app wants to access it anyway, renewed permission is required.

During use, a small green symbol lights up on the top right of the display.

According to Google, Android 12 needs 22 percent less battery power, which is due to the many improvements in the background.

Security was also high on the agenda for the update.

With Android 12, the company offers a new privacy dashboard that breaks down the most important app accesses.

It shows in a pie chart how often the individual data from the camera, microphone and location has been accessed in the past 24 hours – along with a timeline of the respective usage.

With a tap you can get to the settings for each app from there. If the camera or microphone is in use, this can be recognized by a small notification on the screen.

Access to the camera and microphone can be completely deactivated in the drop-down menu – then permission is required before the next access.

A new gesture appeared in the first beta versions of Android 12: the double tip. This disappeared from the system after a short time and did not make it into the final version.

In the first beta versions there was a revival of the function – it could only be set up, but not actively used.

This is over with the second public beta of Android 12: The function can now be used and one of six different functions can be assigned.

This means, for example, that screenshots can be taken using the double tap or pausing music playback.

Up to now there has been a separate button for controlling the WLAN connection and using the mobile data.

In the second public beta, Google is testing a new system: the two controls merge into one button.

With a tap on it you can see which network is currently connected. In addition, the user can switch to the mobile network or select a different WLAN.

In an emergency, it is important to notify the fire brigade and rescue workers quickly and easily – Google is doing something with Android 12 for this.

One of the new features is an automatic accident detection system.

In addition to the classic emergency numbers such as 112, other telephone numbers can be stored. If the power button is pressed five times in a row, the smartphone automatically sends an emergency call.

The new privacy solution Private Compute Core is open source – just like Android itself. Android 12 also comes with a remote control for the TV systems from Google Chromecast and Sony, which is permanently integrated in the smartphone.

Google also promises to work with partners to enable cars to be unlocked via NFC and UWB.

This will still be possible with selected Pixel and Samsung Galaxy phones in 2021, and BMW will be the first brand to incorporate the function in new models.

If you want to test the new version in the beta phase, you can do so now. It is available for models from Google Pixel, Realme, Xiaomi and Vivo, among others.

Installation on non-Google devices is only recommended for experienced users. The risk of bugs is high, which is why it is not advisable to install it on smartphones that are important in everyday life.

Android 12: New Features for Developers

First, the developers of apps get access to Android 12, because they should adapt their applications to the changes before the new operating system starts.

That is why Google is initially focusing heavily on changes in this area.

Something is changing when it comes to integrating media: Many apps still use the now outdated AVC media encoding.

With Android 12, Google offers compatible media encoding that ensures that videos in HEVC format can also be used by apps that previously ran on the basis of AVC format.

The AVIF standard makes it easier to compress images. Google also creates a central interface in the source code for inserting images and videos.

In order to prevent app crashes and overflowing RAM, Google prohibits starting foreground processes from the background with Android 12.

In the future, there will be the option of coupling haptic feedback with audio – useful, for example, for racing games when uneven terrain is simulated.

Instead of the previous eight channels, Android 12 uses up to 24 channels for spatial audio information. The gesture control has also received an update for even better reactions.

Developers are given the option to configure the notifications on the lock screen so that they can only be read with authentication by the user.

For the simultaneous use of smartwatches or fitness trackers with the appropriate app on the smartphone, an option is now integrated that automatically wakes up the corresponding app.

The developers should now recognize more easily whether a smartphone has rounded corners in order to adjust the display of the application if necessary.

Google announces the introduction of a new start animation for all apps that are enabled by default.

A splash screen is used to make the transition more pleasant after clicking on the app icon until the app is opened.

The functions of the camera should be easier to use thanks to new platforms.

According to its own information, Google is improving the transfer of data from an old to a new phone with Android 12.

Android 12 Beta: What’s still missing

Some functions that were already expected do not appear.

However, that does not mean that they cannot be integrated in the final version.

Until now, the availability of new emojis was linked to the existing operating system because the new symbols were delivered with an update.

As XDA Developers reported, this approach could come to an end with Android 12.

According to the report, Google no longer wants to integrate the emojis into the operating system, but – like many fonts – make them updatable via the Play Store.

This could also shorten the update cycles for new emojis, and the coupling to a specific operating system would also be off the table.

The data connection restriction is not yet integrated.

It had already appeared in an Android open source project .

This feature would ensure that the data connection for third-party apps is cut – then only system applications or selected apps could send data.

The function of putting apps into a kind of hibernation has not yet appeared in Android 12.

XDA Developers had found the first details about a possible new space saver in the Android open source project .

When is Android 12 coming?

With the first beta for developers, Google published the timetable for the final release. With the start of the first official beta on May 18, 2021, the company is right on schedule.

The public beta, like the development version, receives monthly updates. The version is expected to reach platform stability in August before it appears in September 2021.

If everything goes well, Google is expected to supply the Pixel smartphones with Android 12 in September 2021.

Other manufacturers will then traditionally follow suit with their own versions at the end of the year.

Which devices does Android 12 come on?

Even before the release of Android 12, it can be foreseen which models will receive the update to the new operating system.

The background to this is the update policy of major manufacturers such as Samsung.

As with Android 11, the successor comes first on the Google Pixel smartphones.

Other manufacturers such as Samsung are following suit, as the Android version is still being adapted to the user environment.

This means that the manufacturers integrate their own functions and make design adjustments. You can find out which models have the chance of an Android 12 update in the Android 12 device overview.

What is the name of Android 12?

Google ended a cherished tradition with Android 10.

Since then, new Android versions have no longer received candy as a nickname – only hints can still be found in the source code.

For example, Android 11 was apparently called internally Red Velvet Cake, a red-colored cake that is particularly well-known in the USA.

Even for Android 12, the developers do not want to completely evade the naming, like XDA Developers to report.

Accordingly, as with Android 11, corresponding hints have appeared in the source code that indicate a sweet or a dessert.

According to the research, Android 12 is to be given “Snow Cone” as an internal nickname: a kind of semi-frozen food made from ice chips that are doused with sugar syrup.

It is currently not clear whether there will be a hidden recipe for dessert like with Android 11. A 3D animation can be opened on an Android smartphone via this link ; the recipe for a Red Velvet Cake is hidden in a corner below.

For those who don’t want to search, 9to5Google wrote down the recipe.
