In September 2020, Google released Android 11 . The operating system is now being used on more and more smartphones – manufacturers are equipping the devices piece by piece. The question is for Android 12: Which smartphones will get the update?
I have been able to take a look at Android 12 since mid-February 2021, because Google is making the first developer beta available to them.
The company’s roadmap stipulates that the public beta version should appear in May 2021.
According to the plan , Android 12 will finally be ready for the market in September 2021 .
But which smartphones get the update anyway?
Thanks to the update promises of the dealers, this is already certain. You can find out which devices can look forward to an update to the latest version in this guide.
What does Android 12 offer?
The first beta makes it clear where Google is focusing with the update to Android 12.
Among other things, the update should provide more privacy and control over your own data. Among other things, it is now being ensured that users can see how cookies are being used across locations. Reading out the network address of the smartphone is also made more difficult.
In addition to these innovations, which mainly affect the developers, there are other changes. Among other things, the system color changes to a bluish tone with Android 12.
And the notch at the top of the display should become invisible with a new display – at the expense of the usable display area.
Specifically, this means: A black bar appears at the top of the display and ensures that the camera hole is no longer in the area of the display that is being used.
Who will get Android 12?
As the developer of Android, Google first has access to the new version of the operating system, which is why the Pixel smartphones usually get access to the update shortly after it is released.
With the models of the Pixel 3 series, however, Android 12 ends: The three years in which Google promised OS updates are over. Samsung solves it differently, however, because the company is extending the duration of the update guarantee.
Current models receive the latest Android version for three years and security updates for four years.
OnePlus is pursuing the opposite strategy: Only the top models there will receive two OS updates in the future – the rest will be empty. Huawei will probably launch its own operating system instead of Android 12 – the reason is the ongoing dispute between the company and the US government.
There is hope for the users of Honor smartphones, because the independence from the former parent company Huawei increases the hope that Android will run on the devices again in the future.
