If you have an Oculus Quest device, you might wonder if you can use your Oculus Quest with the PS4 or PS5. Since both of these PlayStation systems support PlayStation VR, some people reason that they’re compatible with other VR headsets.
Let’s look at whether the Oculus Quest will connect to a PS4 so you know the facts.
Does the Oculus Quest Work With PlayStation 4?
The short answer is: no, the Oculus Quest series is not compatible with the PS4. No Oculus device will work with the PS4 or the PS5. If you plug the Oculus Quest into your PS4, nothing will happen because the PS4 can’t interface with the device.
The only VR headset that works with the PS4 and PS5 is the PlayStation VR. At the time of writing, Sony has announced PlayStation VR2 for PS5, but details are scarce.
Remember that the Quest is designed to work as a standalone headset; all you need are the controllers and headset itself to play. While you can connect the Quest to a powerful computer to play PC VR games, this is optional.
Workarounds for Using Oculus Quest With PS4
The Oculus Quest and Quest 2 are superior to PS VR in almost every aspect. Your Quest is wire-free, allows for room-scale play, and doesn’t require an external camera. The controllers are better and its UI is smoother.
Thus, the sole reason you’d want to connect your Quest to a PS4 is to play PlayStation-exclusive games. While there are a few workarounds for this, they’re not worth the hassle. We’ll lay the basics of these methods out below, but we don’t recommend bothering with them.
Remember that you must have the PS VR headset connected to your PlayStation console and turned on to start VR games. Thus, even if you get one of the below methods working, you can’t use it to play PS VR games on your Quest. They’ll only let you play standard PS4 games on your Quest, which isn’t worthwhile.
You’ll also need a compatible PS4 controller connected to your Quest or PC, depending on which method you use.
1. Sideload the PS Remote Play App
Since the Quest is Android-based, you can sideload Android apps like you would on a phone or tablet. The free SideQuest app on your computer makes it easy to install unofficial games and Android APKs on your Quest headset.
Using SideQuest, you can install the PS Remote Play Android app on your Oculus. From there, use the app like you would on a phone to connect to your PS4 or PS5 and stream your games to the headset.
2. Use PS Remote Play on PC With Virtual Desktop
If you don’t want to bother with sideloading apps on your Quest, another method is installing the PS Remote Play app on your computer. Once you get your PS4 streaming to your computer, use the Virtual Desktop app on your Oculus to mirror your PC desktop to your Quest.
This is far from perfect. Since it involves two layers of streaming, there’s bound to be lag, which will ruin fast-paced games. Virtual Desktop costs $20, though it’s a useful app so you’ll likely find another use for it.
3. Use a Capture Card and Virtual Desktop
If you don’t like either of the above options, there’s one more way to get PS4 games on your Oculus Quest. You can use a capture card to send your PS4’s output to your PC, then run Virtual Desktop on your Quest to mirror what’s on your PC.
This reduces the latency from the second method, since a capture card doesn’t have a delay like streaming does. However, buying a capture card and Virtual Desktop are additional expenses.
Using Oculus Quest With PS4 Isn’t Practical
As we’ve seen, there’s no official way to use an Oculus Quest with a PS4, and the workarounds aren’t worth much either. You can try one if you’re determined to play PS4 games on your Quest, but there’s little benefit to doing so.
You’re better off playing PS4 games on your console and enjoying VR games made for the Quest.
