How to Reinstall Windows 10: Get a Fresh System

Reset Windows 10 - Reinstall Windows 10: This is how you get a fresh system

A properly installed Windows 10 is fast, safe and reliable. Our guide shows you the various options with which you how to reinstall Windows 10 successfully!

If Windows is paralyzed and trial optimization software does not restore the previous high speed, you should reinstall the operating system – the most effective free tuning for any computer.

In the case of Windows 10, this is more convenient than in Windows 7 times, thanks to a number of new variants and simplifications.

The advantages of a new installation are that the PC then runs as quickly as possible – at least after you have set Windows speed brakes ex works eliminated and updated drivers.

In addition, it works reliably (again) because the system runs again with the Microsoft presets that are often suitable for everyday use.

Last but not least, malicious code disappears.

Because as part of the system renewal, you make short work of all data, whether desired or invisible.

The only exception to this is rare malware nested in the BIOS / UEFI.

Prepare to reinstall Windows 10

The first step in upgrading the operating system should be to create a data backup.

Windows moves the data on its partition to C: \ Windows.old if you skip the formatting and / or deletion of the system partition and reinstall it directly (“over”) via the boot disk.

However, cautious users still use an external data partition, a USB stick or a blank CD / DVD; An external USB hard drive is ideal for larger amounts of data.

If you want to secure yourself with a backup, identify the most important files with the Explorer and possibly a start menu search and copy them to a backup memory.

You do not need to back up Windows-specific files, they will end up on the disk anyway when you set up Windows 10 again.

Rather, it is important to consider unique files such as documents or vacation photos and also serial numbers for unlocking paid software packages.

At the end, remove the stick or USB disk with the “Safely remove hardware symbol” in the notification area and pull out your storage medium with the duplicates.

Several variants: Reinstall Windows 10

There is not only one variant of reinstalling an operating system.

There are several ways of doing this: They all have in common that entering a Windows license key is usually superfluous.

Because if Windows 10 was already activated, Microsoft recognizes the hardware using an identification number and the system is activated again – without any action on your part.

This also applies to complete systems in which Windows 10 has been preinstalled by the manufacturer; the license key is permanently stored here in the ACPI tables of the UEFI BIOS. For more information on activation, see Microsoft’s digital license info table .

  • You can choose to reinstall Windows 10 with a DVD (purchased or burned by you). Alternatively, you can use a USB stick – the latter variant is the faster. You don’t have a Windows 10 image file that can be used to create a setup DVD or setup stick? In that case, download the system using the Windows ISO Downloader or the official Media Creation Tool (MCT).
  • To burn a Windows ISO, right-click on it in Windows 8.1 / 10 and select the option “Burn disk image”; in Windows 7, a double-click is sufficient. The burn process should be carried out under Windows 7, for example, if your newly installed Windows 10 computer no longer boots (and only a second Windows 7 device with an optical drive is available as a makeshift).
  • If you do not want to use the Windows own burning function, you can use an alternative such as ImgBurn , Ashampoo Burning Studio or Active ISO Burner .
  • With the help of Rufus, you can transfer your ISO file to a stick in a bootable manner. The tool is superfluous if you use the MCT as it creates ISO files or alternatively creates setup sticks. Rufus is, however, suitable as a fallback option if the MCT fails and the creation of a setup stick is aborted; it happens sometimes.
  • Restart the PC and boot from the Windows 10 installation disk. To do this, switch to the BIOS setup or the BIOS boot menu with the appropriate F-function key. In the setup you change the boot sequence so that the USB port or the DVD drive has a higher priority than the internal hard disk / SSD; you should undo the change after the reinstallation is complete. In the boot menu, on the other hand, select stick / DVD drive directly for booting (and do not have to revise any changes to the firmware boot priority). By the way, you often get to the BIOS setup with a separate boot menu entry – useful if you want to make a corresponding change here.
  • Follow the installation instructions of Windows 10. The old installation disappears without any remains if you mark the old system drive and format and / or delete it. Corresponding buttons have been available for this since Windows Vista. If you fail to format / delete the partition, a Windows.old folder will be created (which contains the previous operating system as a backup, including any malware files – which are largely safe).

Upgrade to Windows 10 and discard everything

In addition to a new Windows installation, Windows upgrades are also possible, whereby the installation routine converts the old Windows (such as Vista) to a newer one (such as Windows 7).

Some Windows 7 users misused the principle: They installed Windows 7 on Windows 7, i.e. upgraded to the same system.

With such an in-place upgrade, damage can be repaired without data loss.

The principle is similarly applicable to the newer Windows 10 – creating a backup does not hurt here either. Use Microsoft’s MCT (Media Creation Tool) for this:

  • Building an installation disk – as described in the article above – is recommended for several new installations; it can be used on the same PC as well as on different devices. If you do not have an unused storage medium, you can alternatively initiate a new installation with an ISO file: Incorporate one into the Explorer with a double click and call up the setup.exe file in the mounted drive with your own drive letter. Under “Change the elements to be kept> Select what you want to keep”, choose the option “Nothing” by selecting the radio button. This is accompanied by the deletion of all files, programs and settings.
  • Alternatively, you can choose in the MCT program that you do not want to keep anything: Decide against creating the ISO and opting for the “Upgrade now for this PC” option – the time-consuming download of the new installation data follows. Then you indicate that you want to discard everything.
  • Such a quasi-upgrade is impossible if Windows 10 no longer boots. While a so-called repair installation was possible “from outside” with Windows XP’s setup boot CD, the described upgrade system update to the same system after booting from the setup data carrier is not provided. The alternative possible resetting of Windows 10 using the Settings app also requires that the operating system is still starting. This is how it works from ongoing operations: Open the Settings app with Windows-i and select “Update and Security” and “Recovery> Let’s go”.
